1 Math SL Year 2 August 24th

2 Introduction to IA Internal assessment is weighted as 20% of the IB Mark for the course The IA is an exploration of mathematics in an area or topic of your choosing There is no required topics, Choose a topic or an area that you find interesting (Sports, Weather, Science, Psychology etc.)

3 Choosing your topic

4 What do I need to include?

5 Rubric Criterion A: Communication
Criterion B: Mathematical Presentation Criterion C: Personal Engagement Criterion D: Reflection Criterion E: Use of Mathematics

6 Criterion A: Communication Organization, coherence conciseness and completeness of exploration.
Should have Introduction: Discuss the context of your exploration Rationale: Explain why you chose your topic Description of the aim of the exploration and should be clearly identifiable A conclusion

7 Things to keep in mind: graphs, models, illustrations… should be in flow of text CITATIONS are extremely important and used appropriately (footnotes and bibliography) should “read well”… and avoids irrelevancies

8 Criterion B: Mathematical Presentation Use of math language where required, use multiple forms of mathematical representation (formulae, diagrams, tables, charts, graphs etc) Use correct math language when communicating math concepts, reasonings and findings USE TECHNOLOGY!!!.... At least your GDC. Can use outside tech like Geogebra, Graphing Calculator, Wolfram Alpha, spreadsheets, word- processing tools. Define key terms…. Yes this includes math ones Express your results accurately… if it doesn’t fit the trend you like its ok, don’t force results. Scales and labeling of graphs Variables explicitly defined Use math notation ( use ×𝑛𝑜𝑡 ∗, 𝑎 2 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑎^2)

9 Criterion C: Personal Engagement Extent that you engage in the exploration
Thinking creatively Addressing your personal interests Presenting math ideas your own way Asking questions, making conjectures, and investigating math ideas Looking for and creating math models for real world situations Considering historical and global perspectives Exploring unfamiliar mathematics

10 Criterion D: Reflection How well you review, analyze and evaluate the exploration
Can be found in your conclusion, but should be found throughout your paper Discuss implication of findings Consider significance Stating possible limitations or extensions Link to different fields or areas of math

11 Criterion E: Use of Mathematics How well you review, analyze and evaluate the exploration
Use math of your level….. Using a majority of arithmetic may not be the best use of mathematics. Fully understand math used.
