The Persian Wars were fought between the Persians and the Greeks. Even though they were divided by land and practice, the Greek city-states united to give the Persians their first defeat and become the most powerful civilization in the world. To do this, the Greeks used their geography and superior tactics to offset the fact that they were vastly outnumbered by the Persian army.
The Athenian navy was quite a force. At the battle of Salamis, Themistocles used superior tactics to defeat the Persians by ramming their boats.
At the battle of Thermopylae, 300 Spartans held their ground in a mountain pass against the entire Persian army.
