Metamorphic Rocks Learning Objectives
To understand how process deep in the Earth can change Igneous and Sedimentary rocks into Metamorphic rocks. To recognise some Metamorphic rocks and to know the original rocks they formed from.
2
Deep in the Earth’s crust the effects of high pressure and heat from the magma can cause some rocks to change their structure and become Metamorphic rocks.
3
Gneiss Granite Heat Pressure Granite (Igneous) is heated and put under high pressure. This causes the different minerals to align themselves into layer and a new rock called Gneiss (Metamorphic) is produced.
4
Chalk Limestone Heat Pressure Marble Porous Sedimentary rocks Chalk and Limestone are changed into the crystalline rock Marble by heat and pressure. Any fossils in the Sedimentary rocks are usually destroyed by this process.
5
Slate Shale Pressure High pressure on the porous Sedimentary rock Shale forces the particles to line up in thin layers and the non-porous Metamorphic rock Slate is formed.
