KOREAN WAR Japan seized Korea before WWII and occupied it. Soon after the Japanese surrendered it, the Korean peninsula became divided by the Cold War; the Soviet Union held the North and the United States held the South. In 1949, communist forces in the North attacked the South and the UN voted to help the South defend itself. 14 countries, including Canada, pledged troops in South Korea.

By 1950, China backed North Korea and the battle ensued…
RESULTS: Neither side could make any real advances. Cnds served – wounded, 516 dead Truce was called and a border was drawn and they remain enemies to this day.
