1
In the hypothesis if I add fertilizer to plants they will grow taller what are the variables?
Independent variable Dependent variable Fertilizer Height of plants The one you are in your data Control of
2
Form a sentence for writing a hypothesis
If we _(how we affect the independent variable), (independent variable), then the (dependent variable) will (how the dependent variable is affected).
3
A scientist wanted to know if the temperature of water changed when the depth increased
Use the Sentence formation to rewrite the above statement into a hypothesis
4
A scientist wanted to know if the color of a t-shirt worn affects the body temperature.
If we increase the darkness of the t-shirt worn, then the body temperature will increase If we decrease the darkness of the t-shirt worn, then the body temperature will increase If we decrease the darkness of the t-shirt then the body temperature will decrease If we increase the darkness of the t-shirt then the body temperature will increase

7
While performing a controlled experiment we must collect DATA
Charts Tables Graphs The best ways to collect and organize our data
8
The temperature at each depth of a pond is recorded below
4 degrees celsius at 200 meters, 12deg C at 100m, 50 meters 18 degrees celsius, 15 deg at 75, 150 meters= 5 degree celsius Is there a better way to organize the data?
9
A scientist wanted to know if the temperature of water changed when the depth increased
10
How can we organize data collected during an experiment?
11
Creating a data table or chart
1- Title The title should tell the information you are looking at 2-Create columns The first column should be your independent variable 3- Name all columns 4- Add your data 5- Make sure to put in the units of measurement
12
Data Average Daily Height (cm) Day 1 Day2 Day3 Day4 Day5 Day6 Day7
Pot A(5plants) 2 4 6 8 10 14 16 Pot B (10 plants) Analyze the data and write a conclusion

(each box or line increases by same amount)
Setting Up Line Graph Create a title Each axis must be labeled & indicate units Independent variable (the cause) is represented on the horizontal axis (X-axis) Dependent variable (the effect or result) is represented on the vertical axis (Y-axis) Numbers on each axis must be consistent (each box or line increases by same amount) Points must be plotted in proper location, circled and connected
15
Making a line graph Choose a proper scale for each axis
The easiest numbers are: 1,2,3,5,10 or 20 If plotting more than one set of data on the same graph you must create a key or legend Pot A Pot B

Thursday 9/22/16 AIM: How can we analyze information on a line graph?
DO NOW: What are the two axis on a line graph? Which axis is the horizontal? The vertical? Where do we put the independent variable? The dependent variable? HOMEWORK: Practice graph

Line Graph A line graph is a graph used to show change over time!!
What can time be measured in??? Seconds - Minutes - Hours – Days - Weeks - Months – Years - Decades - Centuries - etc. 12/6/2018

22
X-axis and Y-axis When you are making a line graph, the x-axis is always horizontal, and the y-axis is always vertical. The x and y-axis usually starts with zero on a line graph It is important to make sure that the intervals on our y-axis are always equal. What do I mean by this? 12/6/2018
23
Intervals or Scale When we are setting up a line graph, we need to decide what intervals we want to use. If we are graphing the temperature for a year, do we want to put 365 days on the graph, and 100 different temperatures? A scale is a numerical value that each box on your axis will represent 12/6/2018

Q & A About how much money in total did this person spend on Monday and Thursday? How do you know? Which day did this person spend the most money? How do you know? This person spent the most money on Wednesday. I know this because the graph is the highest on Wednesday. This person spent about $9.00 on Monday and Thursday. I know this because I looked at where the line was for Monday and Thursday and added the two amounts. 12/6/2018

To figure out how much gas they need a week.
Q & A How many days did this person travel less than 30 miles? Which day did the driver travel the least amount of miles? Why might someone want to keep track of their miles for the week? 5 days Sunday To figure out how much gas they need a week. 12/6/2018

Friday 9/23/16 AIM: How do we take measurements in the Living Environment? DO NOW: Complete the following table to your best ability: Measurement Instrument Standard Units Mass Grams (g) Graduated cylinder Volume of a solid (lxwxh) Cm3 ,m 3 Meter stick Temperature
32
What is the Metric System?
The metric system is a system of measurement that is based on the number ten It is often used in science and in countries around the world
33
How is it different? The metric system uses meters, grams, liters and Celsius The English System uses feet, ounces, gallons and Fahrenheit
34
Meter (m) Metric ruler Liter, cm3 = mL What are… Units Tools 1. Length
2. Volume 3. Mass 4. Density 5. Temperature Meter (m) Metric ruler Metric ruler or graduated cylinder Liter, cm3 = mL Triple-beam balance Grams (g) Tools for mass & volume g/ml or g/cm3 ºC or K thermometer
35
What is mass? Mass is the amount of matter in an object Triple beam balance is used to measure mass Measured in grams
36
What is weight? Weight is the amount of gravity that acts upon an object
37
Are mass and weight the same?
Mass and weight are different. Mass is the amount of matter in an object and weight is determined by the amount of gravity and matter in an object. This is why your weight changes on different planets
38
How do we measure mass? Mass is measured by using a balance
The metric units for mass are the gram (g), and kilogram (kg)
39
The amount of matter in a given object
Triple-beam balance Grams (g) mg
40
What is length? Length is the distance between two points
41
How do we measure length?
Length is measured using a metric ruler or meter stick The metric units for length are the meter (m), centimeter (cm), and the millimeter (mm)
44
What is volume? Volume is the amount of space an object occupies
45
How do we measure volume?
We use a graduated cylinder for liquids We use a ruler for rectangular solids (L x W x H) We use the water displacement method to determine the volume of irregularly shaped objects The metric units for volume are the liter (L), the cubic centimeter (cm³), and the milliliter (mL)
46
Volume of a liquid Measured with a Graduated Cylinder, Beaker or Erlenmeyer flask Measured in Liters
48
Volume of a solid Calculated Measured in units3
Length x width x height Measured in units3 Metric ruler Length x Width x Height (L x W x H)
49
What is temperature? Temperature is the average motion of particles We can relate this motion to how hot or cold it is.
50
How do we measure temperature?
Temperature is measured using a thermometer The metric unit for temperature is Celsius (°C)
51
Length Metric Ruler Liter Volume Gram Triple-beam balance ºC Temperature Mass = The amount of matter in an object Weight = The gravitational pull on the mass of an object
