Defining Wardriving A statistical approach to war driving: the act of moving around a specific area and mapping the population of wireless access points for statistical purposes The popular Hollywood and popular media view of war driving: the act of locating and possibly exploiting connections to wireless local area networks while driving around a city or elsewhere

Wardriving sites Wardriving.com Wardrive.net WiFi Hotspots WIGLE The Wireless Database Project FON Wikihow.com Youtube.com WardrivingOnline.com Wisegeek.com

Wardriving Past and Present Data points divide into two separate sets: – A. the traditional WAP attached to a WLAN – B. the smartphone, tablet, router, laptop, printer etc. War driving is it a Crime? – Depends on the jurisdiction and the police authority Tool Sets also divide into two separate sets: – Laptop – Embedded as part of your smartphone or iDevice

Finding Open Points Finding Open points during war driving with economically exploitable data was a straight forward x = id. In the current environment this equation has changed to x = (id) – (id – in), where x is a subset or union of the total number of devices with wi-fi, those attached as a WAP and those attached to a WLAN.

Wardriving Conclusion Wardriving to find exploitable WAP with WLAN is not longer a h = w = 1 but now the criminal enterprise must add and additional step: Locate the union of the two sets, WAP attached to device and WAP attached to a WLAN. Wardriving is no longer as economically beneficial an expercise.
