Limits to Freedom Southern Democrats 1876 (100 years of Murica!)
Loyal to the old South Used Gerrymandering to regain control of the government Drawing new districts to prevent Black Americans from being elected. Gained control of the House of Representatives and reestablished Southern control over state governments. 1876 (100 years of Murica!) Most Americans were ready to move on. They were tired of dealing with problems in America. They knew they were there, they just hoped they’d go away.

Republicans lose Lost their control in the South Were going to lose the Presidency Got their candidate Rutherford Hayes elected by promising to withdraw troops form the South Terrorism Ku Klux Klan terrorized southern blacks and their supporters Killed many people Legislation Civil Rights Act repealed Enforcement Act of reduced “The state cannot discriminate…but people can.” African Americans flee to the North but are not well received.
