Figure 1 Large bowel biopsies from two patients with quiescent ulcerative colitis Figure 1 | Large bowel biopsies from two patients with quiescent ulcerative colitis. The lumen in all images is at the top of the figures. In parts a and b (magnification ×100), the crypts are irregular, an indication of previous destruction. The number of inflammatory cells between the crypts is normal in part a, but overtly increased in part b. Inflammatory cells in part b are shown in detail in inset (magnification ×750), revealing increased numbers of eosinophils with their red-orange granules, and increased numbers of plasma cells with purplish cytoplasm and eccentrically placed nuclei that reach the deepest part of the biopsy. Unsurprisingly, the risk of disease relapse is far higher in biopsy b than a. Riddell, R. H. (2016) Mucosal healing in ulcerative colitis: what constitutes remission? Nat. Rev. Gastroenterol.
