1
How can we separate mixtures?
All pupils will be able to (Baseline): Collect data and make a simple conclusion about the composition of different solutions. Most pupils will be able to (Further): Analyse results of a paper chromatograph objectively. Some pupils will be able to (Challenge): Apply knowledge about chromatography to explain how it is useful in industry.
2
What type of separation is this?
Distillation Crystallisation Filtration
3
What are mixtures? A mixture is made up of two or more substances (elements or compounds) that are not chemically combined together. Mixtures can be separated by their physical properties e.g. solubility and boiling point
4
Starter: A mixture of iron and sawdust can be separated by simple distillation/ chromatography/ a magnet. Sodium chloride dissolved in water (salty water) can be separated by filtration / crystallisation / chromatography. Mud mixed with water can be separated by filtration / crystallisation / distillation.

Chromatography Who poisoned the plants?

The Suspects Homer Krusty the Clown Smithers Pen 1 Pen 2 Pen 3 We have taken a sample of the ink from the letter and have performed the chromatography assessment. Because the ink in black pens is made up of different colours, these colours will separate out. With our pens, each ink is different. If we find the ink that matches the ink in the letter we will find the culprit.
