3 What is Asset Management and What It Is Not IT Asset Management: Is the set of business practices that join financial, contractual and inventory functions to support life cycle management and strategic decision making for the IT environment. Assets include all elements of software and hardware that are found in the business environment.life cycle managementsoftwarehardware Common Business Practices: request and approval process, procurement management, life cycle management, redeployment and disposal managementprocurementlife cycle Goals of ITAM: –Uncover savings through process improvement and support for strategic decision making –Gain control of the inventory –Increase accountability to ensure compliance –Enhance performance of assets and the life cycle management –Risk reduction through standardization, proper documentation, loss detection –Optimize financial and expenditure planning ITAM is not software distribution and Patch Management (that is part of Desktop Release Management Process; however, ITAM/CMDB data are inputs and/or outputs associated with the process)

5 IT Configuration Management: all configuration items used in the provision of live, operational services Configuration Management goes beyond the recording of computer hardware and/or software for the purpose of asset management, although it can be used to maintain asset information. The extra value provided is the rich source of support information that it provides to all interested parties. This information is typically stored together in a configuration management database (CMDB).CMDB Goals of Configuration Management: Identify and minimize the impact of changes Provide accurate information on CIs Improve security by controlling the versions of CIs in use Facilitate adherence to legal obligations Assist financial and expenditure planning

8 Status of Key Efforts for ITAM Loading of Asset Types (desktops/laptops, servers, network, software and storage) –5989 desktops (3509 deployed) and 2980 laptops (2102 deployed) –previous numbers 5,866 and 2,494 –1722 (1507 deployed) physical servers by data center and platform –previous number 1,566 –396 virtual servers by data center and platform –previous number 0 –8492 (4292 deployed) network devices by data center and external –previous number 742 –Storage reflected via Configuration Discovery for Distributed Hosting Asset Management Processes –Desktop/laptop in place and most mature from procurement through decommissioning (CSI going on) –Server, network devices and storage in development Standard reports for desktop/laptop, servers and network devices published weekly/monthly in Documentum Integration of Spectrum to CA database for networking assets Integration of NSWAN to CA database Integration of CA database to Remedy asset management database Implement Warranty contract asset associations

11 ITAM Benefits All ITS Organizations and Customers: –ITS has improved & updated IT asset information for ITS services –Provide data/information to enable more effective, efficient execution of Change, Release, Incident and Problem ( note hrs spent on power upgrade, storage upgrade and billing reconciliation) –Reduced TCO for IT assets Service Delivery/Service Owners: –Capacity planning/expense optimization and smoothing: ITS is better able to forecast and plan for the replacement of desktops, laptops, servers, network devices, storage and software –Inventory management accuracy and optimization –Problem identification/prioritization: via relating of CIs and/or assets to incidents, changes and problems –Avoid penalties for software license non-compliance (e.g. Odyssey wireless client) –Reduce costs by avoiding software license under-utilization –Improved contract and warranty management Service Support –Deployed ITS desktops and laptops updated dynamically with ability to track software –Reduce system outages made by changes enabled by improved impact analysis –Optimize/scale technical support staff and reduce travel costs (i.e. remote capabilities) SACM –Enables configuration management Fiscal –Expense reconciliation against budget –Billing reconciliation
