The election of 1992 included Bush, Clinton, and Ross Perot (received the highest % for a 3rd party candidate). Clinton won and became the first president born after WWII. A main goal was to reduce the budget deficit.

New Laws: 1. The Brady Bill – waiting period & background checks when purchasing handguns The Crime Bill – banned 19 kinds of assault weapons and provided for 100,000 new police officers. 3.Family & Medical Leave Act of 1993 – permitted workers to take time off from jobs for special family situations.

1994 – both houses of Congress were controlled by the Republicans, and they passed the line-item veto, but this was overturned by the Supreme Court saying it gave the President too much power.

The economy continued to improve & 1998 ended with a federal budget surplus (first time in 3 decades). In 1998, Clinton was accused of lying under oath (perjury), and the House passed 2 articles of impeachment. The Senate, needing a 2/3 majority, voted 45 guilty to 55 not guilty on perjury, and 50 guilty to 50 not guilty on obstruction of justice. Clinton was acquitted of charges.
