2 Social Context Early in the 1950s, Queen Elizabeth II reigned in the UK. Winston Churchill was the Prime Minister. As a consequence, he ruled the country. In the 1950s, conditions for working class youths were good. For instance, they could buy cheap motorcycles thanks to the stable economic climate. In the 1960s, there were many riots with rockers in the south. Besides, there was mass immigration from the West Indies, India and Pakistan. There was a lot of violence due to racial prejudice, for example, the Notting Hill riots. Queen Elizabeth II Winston Churchill

3 Origins A Mod is a member of a subculture that originated among working class youths between 1950 and Mod was the short name of « Modernist ». They chose this name because they wanted to make a reference to modern jazz. They emerged in London or in New Towns in the South of England. Besides, they were inspired by Beatniks and Teddy Boys. 4 Appearance A group of Mods in the 1950s Mods were stylish and wore sophisticated suits. In fact, they were obsessed by fashion. They loved wearing modern Italian and French clothes. In general, they had short haircuts. On the one hand, boys generally wore drainpipe trousers, thin ties, V- Neck jumpers or military parkas and bowling shoes. On the other hand, girls wore short, colourful dresses, miniskirts and mens' trousers or shirts. Moreover, they had little makeup. They also wore flat shoes or boots.

5 Way of Life Mods were fond of riding scooters such as Vespas and Lamprettas. They enjoyed doing shopping in Carnaby Street. They loved going to night clubs and dancing. There was a lot fighting between Mods and Rockers. Consequently, they used weapons namely bike chains and knives. A group of Mods on their Vespas

6 Music At first , in the 1950s, they listened to sophisticated modern jazz such as Dave Brubeck, Bo Diddley and Muddy Waters. Then in the 1960s, they turned to Ska Music. The Who, the Yardbirds and the Kinks were British bands whom Mods listened to. Bo Diddley Muddy Waters Dave Brubeck
