Types of Agriculture Market-oriented agriculture - farmers grow products to sell to consumers Subsistence Agriculture - food is produced by a family for its own needs Shifting cultivation - farmers clear trees or brush for planting Pastoralism - herding animals

The von Thunen Model

The von Thunen Model This model explains the different types of agriculture in a market economy The land closest to urban areas has the highest value, and land values decrease as one moves away from the city. The most intensive forms of agriculture (those that generate the most profit on the smallest plots of land) are located closer to urban areas.

Less intensive activities that require large amounts of land take place farther away from the cities (i.e. ranching and grain farming)

Basic Settlement Forms
Draw the 8 basic settlement forms found in rural areas (page 127 in World Geography Today) Answer the following questions: How do string, or linear, settlement forms differ from cluster forms? Why do you think road intersections and rivers are common locations for hamlets and villages?
