Genetics Lab

Day 1 Procedure Draw a line with a pencil through the center of a circular filter paper to divide the paper in half. Label one side P1 and the other F1 Add your group names to the filter paper as well. Place the filter paper on the bottom of a Petri dish and several drops of water until the paper is completely soaked but the water is not sitting in the dish. Take 5 P1 and 5 F1 seeds and place them on the correct side of the filter paper. Place the lid on the Petri dishes and put the dishes under the growing lamp.

The image of the second parent (P2) is provided below for later reference:
This is what your P1 plants will look like at the same 4 day old age.

Daily for 2 days Measure the height of your plants and check their appearance. Do you see any differences between the P1 and F1 plants?

Day 4 With your lab group, count, measure the height and analyze the characteristics of your plants. What differences do you see between the two generations. Be sure that you look at both P1 and P2 (posted on Schoolpointe) parents’ characteristics. Come up with a null hypothesis about the possible inheritance of the contrasting traits that you observed. Predict the possible genotypes of the parents and the F1 generation. Remember, we still need to complete the data collection on the F2 generation. Can you predict what you expect to see on the F2 generation? Try to complete all relevant genetic crosses. Work on your lab reports.
