Rare Earth Complexes in a Sol-Gel Matrix: Synthesis and Luminescence Karen S. Brewer, Department of Chemistry, Hamilton College, Clinton, NY 13323 This year we continued our investigation of complexes involving antenna ligands to enhance the fluorescence of the rare earth ions in a sol-gel matrix by synthesizing further calixarene ligands and their europium complexes. In addition, we studied europium’s complexation with crown ethers and a bis-amidopyridine ligand their incorporation into a silica matrix. L= EuL3 in a TEOS matrix Pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid bis-[(1-naphthalen-1-yl-ethyl)-amide] is an effective chelate for trivalent lanthanides. Gels prepared without acid catalyst for gel formation fluoresce; those prepared with trace amounts of acid do not fluoresce. Fluorescence spectrum of Eu(18-crown-6)3+ successfully imbedded in a TEOS-derived sol-gel matrix
