2 Health Promotion Health Promotion encourages people to achieve as high a level of wellness as possible Health Promotion principles include: focus on personal character (meaning accept responsibility-become concerned about others), self-disciplining (in other words cast out laziness), focus on the word of god (that making sure the truth and power of the scriptures stand out in every area of our lives)

4 "Hand washing is the single most important means of preventing the spread of infection."
Hand-transmission is the major source of bacterial, pathogens, viruses which cause disease, food borne illness and nonsocomial infections.  Everyone is at risk, but nearly one-third of the population is a high risk.  These people being elderly, very young, pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems (which may be from the common cold).

5 So Why All the Fuss About Hand Washing?
Clean hands are the single most important factor in preventing the spread of pathogens and antibiotic resistance in healthcare settings. Hand hygiene reduces the incidence of healthcare associated infections. CDC estimates that each year nearly 2 million patients in the United States get an infection in hospitals, and about 90,000 of these patients die as a result of their infection. More widespread use of hand hygiene products that improve adherence to recommended hand hygiene practices will promote patient safety and prevent infections.

6 “It is known that hand washing causes a significant reduction in the carriage of pathogens on the hands.” Source: APIC Guideline for Handwashing and Hand Antisepsis in Health Care Settings Effective Handwashing

7 Facts According to the CDC
Food borne illness kills  over 10,000 people each year. Food borne illness outbreaks originate over 70% of the time in food service operations As many as 40% of the cases are related to poor hand washing Over 80 million cases of food poisoning are reported in the US each year In health care MD/Nurses wash only 30% of the required times Nearly 2.5 million nonsocomial infections occur in the US each year Estimated 30,000 deaths each year from nonsocomial infections and contribute to an additional 70,000 deaths Major factor in the spread of disease in daycare today is improper hand washing 1 out of 5 daycare workers are found not washing their hands  or improper handwashing.

8 Now knowing Most common mode of transmission of pathogens is via hands! Let’s discussed them

9 HAND Staphylococcus Streptococci Bacillus Influenza A Bacteroides
E. Coli Pseudomonas Haemophilus Nonsocomial

10 When we forget to wash our hands, or don't wash them properly, we can spread these germs to other people, or give them to ourselves by touching our eyes, mouths, noses or cuts on our bodies.

11 We can also pick up germs from objects, such as doorknobs and stair railings, touched by other people who aren't good hand washers. Think about all the things you touch each day and how many people may have touched them before you.

12 Indications for Hand Washing
When hands are visibly or not visibly dirty, contaminated, or soiled, wash with non-antimicrobial or antimicrobial soap and water. Somebody may feel that this is not enough information….so allow me to go into details Healthcare workers should wash hands with soap and water when hands are visibly dirty, contaminated or soiled and use an alcohol-based handrub when hands are not visibly soiled to reduce bacterial counts. Guideline for Hand Hygiene in Health-care Settings. MMWR 2002; vol. 51, no. RR-16.

13 When You Should Wash Before you Prepare or eat food
Treat a cut or wound Tend to someone who's sick Put in or take out contact lenses Do any kind of activity that involves putting your fingers in or near your mouth, eyes, etc.

14 After you Go to the bathroom
Handle uncooked foods, especially raw meat Eat Blow your nose, cough or sneeze Handle garbage Tend to someone who's sick Change a diaper Play with or touch a pet, especially reptiles and exotic animals

15 HOW Should We Wash Our Hands?
Wet hands with running water. Apply soap. Thoroughly distribute soap over all hand surfaces. Vigorously rub hands together for seconds. Rinse soap. Dry hands with a disposable towel. Turn water off using a disposable towel (unless foot operated). Source: APIC Guideline for Handwashing and Hand Antisepsis in Health Care Settings Effective Handwashing

16 A Few Helpful Tips . . . Be sure to thoroughly wash all skin surfaces.
Pay close attention to hard-to-reach areas: Between the fingers Finger tips Under the nails Use a nail brush if necessary Use warm water … not too hot, not too cold Source: APIC Guideline for Handwashing and Hand Antisepsis in Health Care Settings Effective Handwashing

17 Now We have wash off the surface, no more Staphylococcus Streptococci
Bacillus Influenza A Bacteroides E. Coli Pseudomonas Haemophilus

18 Who may stand in his holy place!
He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false. Psalm 24:3-4 Reminder I’m talking about health promotion by way of hand washing

19 Clean Hands Mix in the holy ghost with hand washing
Washing away all our sins Now with health promotion by way of hand washing we have not only destroyed the pathogen but also established the fruit of the spirit love, peace, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self -control joy

20 Summary hand washing What benefits do they provide?
In summary, alcohol-based handrubs provide several advantages compared with handwashing with soap and water, because they not only require less time, they also act faster. In addition, alcohol-based handrubs are more effective for standard handwashing than soap, are more accessible than sinks, are the most efficacious agents for reducing the number of bacteria on the hands of healthcare workers, and can even provide improved skin condition.

21 Efficacy of Hand Washing Preparations in Killing Pathogens
Good Better Best Plain soap is good at reducing bacterial counts but antimicrobial soap is better, and alcohol-based handrubs are the best. Plain Soap Antimicrobial soap Plain soap Antimicrobial soap Holy ghost

22 Health Promotion Fear god and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man…Such a simple to do list produces more than clean hands; it produces fruits of righteousness in our lives!
