2 How Canada became involved
Britain still controlled the foreign policy of all it’s dominions That means…when Britain declared war on Germany, Canada & the entire British Empire were automatically at war Most Anglophones were of British descent Lots of National pride to fight for Britain!

3 “Eager Beavers”! Canadian PM promised 25,000 soldiers to Britain
BUT, more than 30,000 people volunteered Why? Urge to fight for Motherland Britain! Believed it would be a short war  Home for Christmas Life in Canada was dull at the time…Fighting in Europe would be exciting! Maybe can come home to Canada a HERO! Had no job, wanted to escape financial worries

4 Are Canadian Soldiers Ready?
Canada not involved with “Militarism”, “Imperialism” The need for military was not present… until NOW Troops had to be clothed, armed & trained in short amount of time

5 Help National Identity
Many Canadians had never talked with people from other parts of Canada The war training brought Canadians together Instead of CEF (Cdn Force) mixed with British army, they stayed separate… resulting in more Canadian pride!

6 Habeas Corpus The right to be brought in front of a judge to determine lawfulness of arrest Right of “someone arrested” to be judged if they actually broke the law Habeas Corpus was REMOVED during War Measures Act Police could arrest & detain anyone without reason

7 War Measures Act Government has more control over country – economy, security, transportation, trade, welfare Gives gov’t power to do everything for the “security, safety, peace, order” of country

8 War Measures Act To meet the demands of the war - WWI Censor the Mail
Do everything to keep security & safety of country Censor the Mail Take control of economy, transportation, trade, manufacturing

9 Internment Camps Held “dangerous” or people that were a threat at these camps. Because so many people were being detained, the jails could not hold them…so they went to internment camps Lots of Immigrants – Especially Germans & Austria - Hungarians
