Reaction Guide Discussion
INDIVIDUALLY : Rank the seriousness of each of the 14 social offenses committed in the play. Answer the following questions on a separate sheet of paper: 1. Review your answers at the beginning of the play. Have you changed your mind about the seriousness of any of the offenses? What do you think caused you to change your mind? 2. Based on the seriousness of some of the social offenses committed in the play, what do you think are some messages (themes) that the play tries to teach its audience? 3. How do character attributes listed on the sheet contribute to the “fate” of the young lovers? Explain. Once everyone has answered the questions, leaders are responsible for starting the discussion.
4
Why did we read this? Consider in your group, what makes this play still relevant (meaningful) today? Why should future generations continue to read this work and others of Shakespeare? For each reason why, support it with textual evidence (specific quotes & details) EACH PERSON IS TAKING NOTES ON THIS TOPIC BELOW THEIR WRITTEN ANSWERS FROM THE SOCIAL OFFENSES ACTIVITY.
5
Personal Reflection Reviewing the events of the play, what can you personally learn from what occurred during the play? What lessons can be taken from this play for you? Be specific. 2. Consider what the various themes (author’s purpose or author’s message) could be of Romeo + Juliet. Come up with at least two different themes and support why you believe they are themes with the text (quotes). Note: Themes are complete sentences!
