ETHNOCENTRISM BY Jay Barrett
2
Definition ETHOCENTRISM is the belief that one’s own culture is superior to that of others Ethnocentrism is the belief that the world revolve around us and our culture Metaphorically, we live and experience our lives in a large see-through “plastic bubble” We see the rest of the world as being just like the world in our “little bubble”
3
ETHNIC STEROTYPES The immigrant in the host country, loudly complaining about how much better everything is back home (discuss the concept of the “Ugly American”) In varying degrees, ethnocentrism is found in every culture (what are some examples?)
4
CONSEQUENCES An ethnocentric view of the world leads to attitudes of superiority and messages that are directly and subtly condescending in content and tone These messages are offensive to receivers from other cultures and co-cultures and get in the way of intercultural communication (can you think of examples?)
