Southern Colonies: Plantations, Slaves, But No Schools
Jamestown: First But Not Favored Common Characteristics Directions—write down title and first bullet point in your notes. You must write down everything written on the PPT. You can also write down additional things that I’m saying if it helps you remember. Rip out a piece of paper from your class work section and write your name at the top. When we have reflection questions, you’ll write down your answers on that sheet and then turn in the sheet at the end of the period.

I. Jamestown: First But Not Favored
Intro: Walter Raleigh names VA after the Virgin Queen Elizabeth, creates Roanoke which doesn’t survive and then the Virginia Company establishes Jamestown and it succeeds despite incredibly difficult circumstances---and yet, it is not celebrated in the same way as the Pilgrims landing in Plymouth.

Of the 3 Gs- Gold, God, Glory- Gold was most important- came looking literally for gold as well as natural resources, some were rich men who had never done hard labor, others were poor men looking to make it big

B. Smith saves settlers from the Starving Time
Another reason many people try to look beyond Jamestown is the terrible things the colonists were forced to do when they first arrived. Because many of them had never actually worked a day in their life, the settlers ran into a lot of trouble when they arrived. They did not plant enough food in time and then on top of that, they were hit with sickness after sickness—80% of the original settlers died during the starving time. People survived by running away to the Powhatan, by eating shoes, and by digging up the bodies of people who had died. 1 colonist reported that a man killed and ate his own wife while she was sleeping. John Smith started to give the colony some order. He forced people to work—saying those who do not work will not eat. This started to turn the colony around. He also befriends Pocahontas, who gives the settlers food.

C. Tobacco Takes Off What really saves the colony, though, is the use of tobacco as a cash crop (another reason Jamestown is often neglected) John Rolfe is the one who figures this out, and that starts to make the colony profitable. Rolfe marries Pocahontas.

Reflection Who do you think was more important to the survival of Jamestown: John Rolfe or John Smith? (Did Pocahontas choose the right guy?) What do you think is the most important reason why Jamestown has not received the same kind of attention as the Pilgrims and Thanksgiving? Think Pair Share

II. Common Characteristics
Economy: Indentured Servants, Slaves, and Fertile Soil Plantation System- fertile soil, long growing season allows for cash crops—needed lots of room to grow crops so they created these huge farms that were focused on growing crops for sale rather than the family just using them Only problem: needed labor--Head right system (1618)—got land for paying for people’s passage so wealthy farmers would pay to bring someone over, which would give them more land. Then the person would work for a set number of years (like 7) and then be freed and often times given a small parcel of land to start their own life on (only problem: most didn’t make it that long, really strict rules—couldn’t get married) some people say Africans were first brought over as indentured servants—unclear—but we do know that by the end of the 17th century, slavery was big in many of the Southern colonies. People turned to slavery as indentured servants became less available.

B. Politics: Royalty and the Rich Run the Colonies
Royal Governor House of Burgesses Only House of Burgesses could tax- could stop governor by not paying governor (governor appointed by King), wealthy white landowners could vote for reps in house of burgesses

C. Society: State-Sponsored Religion, Scattered Farms, and No Schools
Religion wasn’t as important as it was in the North, but in most places in the South, the Church of England (church from England) was the established church which meant everyone had to attend on Sundays and support the church with taxes collected by the state. Since plantations were so self-sufficient, there was little sense of community except on those Sundays. People mostly stayed on their plantations. There was lots of space between people and the wealthy simply hired tutors for their kids rather than set up schools in a place that was so spread out.

Reflection Would you rather be the governor of a Southern colony of part of the assembly? Why? Is Boston rural? Why? How does this information help us understand why the North often thinks of many Southerners as uneducated?
