2 Figure 1 NLRP14 Inhibits STING-Dependent Innate Immune Signaling during Fertilization Self-DNA is usually absent from the cytoplasm. However, during fertilization, sperm cell-derived DNA enters oocyte cytoplasm and could potentially trigger innate immune signaling pathways to induce cytokine production that could cause tissue damage and infertility. Abe et al. (2017) show that NLRP14 is specifically expressed in germ cells and negatively regulates the nucleic-sensing responses triggered by sperm cell-derived DNA in oocytes.
