Main issues The main issues are linked to the number of overflights and the main reasons for the reduction in overflights are as follows: The closure of Libyan airspace is still a massive loss in revenue but there is a compensation in the east-west traffic axis. The sanctions imposed by KSA / Bahrain / UAE / Oman on Qatari-registered aircraft led to a huge shift of QTR flights towards Turkey and northern Italy and away from the Malta FIR. Mostly affected were QATAR Airways flights not only from/to North Africa but also from Italy / France / US eastern seaboard. The Qatari sanctions also had a secondary impact on overflights as other non-Qatari registered operators landing / departing OTHH are opting to route the long way round via Turkey (for political reasons).
