2 Workload Model School of Earth and Environment
The workload model is a record of what activities staff are performing and it helps us manage staff and workloads. 220 working days per year WLM - we allocate approximate days for each activity Basic allowance of research time (usually 44 days) which is doubled for new staff for two years. You use this time to undertake research, write grants, attend conferences, write papers etc. New lecturers/ARFs/UAF/IRFs. I track WL according to category and cohort year. I look for staff to increase the workload over time. WLM used as one of the factors when allocating new or changes to workload

3 Timeline School of Earth and Environment
Sept/Oct – Start of the academic year Oct-Jan – Programme Development Team (PDTs) meet and discuss programme changes Nov-Jan – First draft of WLM is passed to all staff from Joanna. You reply with changes additions/corrections, etc. She will send out revised version before Feb Dec/Jan – I request information from PLs/institute directors about issues/changes pertaining to teaching and read all the BAMs Dec/Jan – I meet with new lecturers/academic fellows and discuss teaching allocation Feb – Teaching allocation meetings (several meetings covering all programmes) Module by module – discuss changes and staffing Throughout the year, I address issues of workload and changes to staffing and use the WLM to help guide in addressing these changes.
