Early Life JJ Thomson was an English Physicist born December 18,1856 he has studied at University of Manchester, University of Cambridge, Victoria University of Manchester, and Trinity College. He is known for the Plum Pudding Model, Electron, and Isotope jus5bt to name a few. His greatest discovery was the discovery of the Electron. Thomson won many awards such as the Nobel Prize in Physics. Sadly, he died on August 30,1940.

The atom before Before J.J. Thomson’s discovery, the atomic model was Dalton’s model. His model stated that matter was made of small particles called atoms that were indivisible.

Cathode Ray Experiment
He test three experiments with the cathode ray. 1st: built a cathode ray tube with a metal cylinder on the end. He discovered by using a magnetic field, the negative charge had no attraction to the electrometers. Thus, proving that the negative charge and the ray were not able to be seperated. 2nd: He further tried to prove this by creating a tube with a fluorescent coating and a better vacuum. Even after this, the electric charge did not attract the ray, confirming his theory 3rd: He figured out the charge to mass ratio and found that it was very high. This meant that they had a huge charge or were very smaller than hydrogen ions.

The evidence In the first experiment J.J discovered that putting a magnetic field across the cathode ray nothing happened with the electrometers making the charge turns away. He found that the negative charge and the ray were insperatetable. In the second experiment J.J discovered the rays were changed by the electric charge. This lead him to believe that rays were made up of charges that were negative In JJ’s last experiment he found out that the charge to mass ratio was either a big charge or the charge would be smaller than a hydrogen ion. His idea was that the rays were made of particles that were made in the atoms.

The new atom With the evidence that J.J had discovered he made a new representation of what the atom was and looked like. He discovered that the structure of the atom had negative and positive charge particles mixed together. The atom would be surrounded by the positive and have negative charge particles called electrons inside the atom. He called it the plum pudding model.
