3. The EU Integrated Maritime Policy
In 2007 '…Commission proposes an integrated Maritime Policy for the European Union, based on the clear recognition that all matters relating to Europe’s oceans and seas are interlinked, and the sea-related policies must develop in a joined-up way if we are to reap the desired results..'

Eurostat has developed maritime regions statistics to support the EU policy

In 2010, 207 million people lived in the EU coastal region, i.e. 41% of the EU population

In 2009, the EU Gross Domestic Product in purchasing power standards accounted for billion PPS (at current market prices) and 42% of this GDP was provided by the EU coastal regions. However, the contribution of the coastal regions varied considerably from country to country.

8. Statistics by basins: Freight handled in EU ports in 2010
The total quantity of freight handled in EU ports in 2010 was 3 641 million tonnes. The distribution of maritime freight by basin, clearly showing the dominance of ports in North Sea regions, and the relatively low share of freight handled in ports in regions along the Black Sea or in the outermost regions.

9. Maritime passengers in or out of EU-27 ports in 2010
The total number of maritime passengers in or out of EU-27 ports in 2010 was million. The Mediterranean Sea basin dominated maritime passenger transport, accounting for more than half (52.2 %) of all passengers along the EU’s coast.

Cruise passengers
Cruise passengers accounted for around 2 % to 3 % of all maritime passengers in the EU-27. The dominance of the Mediterranean Sea basin which was apparent for all maritime passenger transport was even greater when restricted to cruise passengers, accounting for approximately two thirds (66.5 %) of all cruise passengers in the EU.

11. Bed places of tourist accomodation in 2010
EU coastal regions around the Mediterranean Sea offered 7.1 million bed places in 2010, some 43.2 % of the total among all coastal regions in the EU-27. The second largest amount of tourist accommodation available was along the coast of the North East Atlantic Ocean, with 4.9 million bed places.

Example of maritime sector statistics: Value added generated by maritime manufacturing sectors
In 2009, the value added generated by maritime manufacturing sectors accounted for Euros million and these sectors employed persons.
Maritime manufacturing is made up by 3 sectors. The first covers the building of ships and floating structure (NACE C3011), the second covers the building of pleasure and sporting boats (NACE C3012) and the third covers the repair and maintenance of ships and boats (NACE C3315).

EU catches
In 2009, EU total catches account for thousand tonnes. Between 2000 and 2009 the EU catches decreased by 25%. The trend of the EU catches of marine fishes followed the same pattern.
