ARI Bashing Officer Sally has just left a presentation given by one of her coworkers to a large group of Army officers. After the presentation, she loiters around to try to get a word with a Captain she’d like to meet. In the hallways after the crowd has thinned out, she overhears an officer whom she does not know strongly criticizing ARI and ARI’s work.

Lessons Learned, Slide 1 of 2
Sally has to be tactful in this situation. However, she also needs to defend ARI’s reputation. She may not be able to change the opinion of the officer talking, but she may be able to prevent those listening from having a bad impression of ARI. Her best approach is to introduce herself to the officer as an ARI employee and to inquire, tactfully, regarding the specifics of the complaint. Following that, she should take responsibility for any ARI errors (yes, we made a mistake) but ensure that it won’t happen again. Or if the officer is mistaken in her characterization of ARI, you should attempt to point out the error. The same ‘fire’ that has the officer bashing ARI may be turned into advocacy if her issue is addressed.
