1 Wallcoverings

2 Wallcovering Acoustical Decorative Durable Wall Protection
1. When selecting wallcoverings the first variable to consider is the amount of traffic the area will receive. 2. Paper and natural wallcoverings are most appropriate where traffic is minimal. They are more delicate than their vinyl counterparts yet offer ample durability and a special style to a variety of placements. 3. Vinyl and synthetic textiles, with their maximum durability and ease of cleaning are especially appropriate for hospitals, sporting arenas, school’s and other high traffic situations. 5. While wallcoverings are categorized by residential and contract segments, it is not uncommon to use residential wallcoverings in contract settings. Residential wallcoverings are often used in assisted living facilities to create a homey feel, while contract wallcoverings may be used in some of today’s most avant-guard homes. Wall Protection

3 Paper Wallcovering Machine printed- cylinders are engraved to trap ink in the voids on the roller. The surface of the roller is carved away and ink is applied to the raised surface, which transfer ink to the paper.

4 Acoustical Wallcovering
Woven Sound passes through while being absorbed by a backer board underneath the textile. Nonwoven Absorbs sound Used in high traffic areas Self-healing nature makes it ideal for tackable walls. Used to reduce reflective sound within a space. Acoustical wallcovering material can be nonwoven or woven.

5 Metallic Wallcovering
Foils – a thin sheet of aluminum foil bonded to a paper or scrim substrate Metallic Coated Vinyls Mylars Light Reflective Vinyl

6 Vinyl Wallcovering Fabric backed vinyl wallcovering has a substrate laminated to a solid vinyl decorative surface. Solid vinyl wallcovering consists of a vinyl film laminated to a fabric or paper substrate. It is generally considered more durable than fabric-backed or paper-backed vinyl because the vinyl is solid not applied in a liquid form. Coated fabric wallcovering has a fabric substrate coated with liquid vinyl or acrylic. The decorative layer is printed on this coating. This is generally considered a wallcovering with breathable characteristics.

7 Vinyl Wallcovering General Categories: Type I
For use in office areas, hospital patient rooms, hotel rooms Type II For use in foyers, lounges, corridors and classrooms, or areas of average to heavy scuffing.

8 Natural/Organic Wallcovering
Cork/Cork Veneer Natural wallcovering used for sound absorption and tack boards

9 Natural/Organic Wallcovering
Grass Cloth Woven native grasses bonded to a paper substrate Linen fabric used as wallcovering.

10 Natural/Organic Wallcovering
Linens

11 Naturals/Organic Wallcovering
Leather/Suede An animal hide..

12 Naturals/Organic Wallcovering
Jute Bast fiber (natural fiber) Woody fibers: flax, jute, hemp, ramie obtained from inner bark of plant stems woven into a flexible wallcovering

13 Naturals/Organic Wallcovering
Silk Natural filament fiber produced by the silkworm in the construction of its cocoon.

14 Naturals/Organic Wallcovering
Wood surfaces Natural wood veneers usually laminated to fabric backing. Jute is a baste fiber. These are woody fibers, such as flax, jute, hemp and ramie which are obtained from the inner bark of plant stems and woven into a flexible wallcovering. Wood Veneer are mostly laminated to fabric backing. They are usually made in sheets 18 to 24 inches wide and provided in any length up to 144” long. Used mostly in office or conference room environment along with some other specialty areas, such as large columns.

15 Digital Wallcovering Digital printing of scanned sources onto virtually any substrate. Ideal for small quantities or creative. Generally, used as murals or borders. Construction involves printing of an unlimited amount of sources such as photos, high resolution images, prints, etc. from a computer onto virtually any substrate. Unlimited selection of colors, variety of creativity and frees the designer from traditional printing. Digitals are generally used as murals or borders.

16 Writable Surfaces/Dry Erase
Commonly used as a writable/erasable wallcovering and/or projection surface Flexible presentation surfaces laminated to a vinyl capped substrate. They are commonly used as a writable or erasable wallcovering and/or projection surface and are available in colors.

17 Wallcovering Materials
The different characteristics of various backings should be considered: Woven Nonwoven Knit Paper Contract paper Acrylic or latex Lining paper Chapter 2

18 Wallcovering Materials
Ratings for all wallcoverings: Class I: decorative Class II: decorative and serviceable Class III: decorative with good serviceability Class IV: deorative with full serviceability Class V: medium commercial serviceability Class VI: full commercial serviceability For commercial wallcoverings Type I: light duty Type II: medium duty Type III: heavy duty Chapter 2

19 Wallcovering Materials
Standard wallcovering sizes Chapter 2

20 Sizes and Estimating The most precise way to estimate the quantity of wallcovering required is the strip method Chapter 2

21 Sizes and Estimates Formulas do not always yield accurate information
The formula may tell you that you can deduct so much wallcovering for openings, but if the full length of wallcovering only partly intersects with the window you cannot reduce your order per formula and receive enough paper Chapter 2

22 Sizes and Estimates The match may be described a straight/side match or it may be given a half-drop or other match Chapter 2

23 Obtaining an Estimate Along with your request for your bid, you should forward: A description of the job Scope of work Description on the material Description of any other work that will have to be done Chapter 2

24 Select Appropriate Characteristics
International symbols for characteristics and performance of wallcoverings are a necessity in today’s world market Chapter 2

25 Cost of Ownership Life –Cycle Analysis
Approximate 15 year performance expectations Can result in 30-25% savings over time
