Roman Expansion Rome would eventually take over all of Italy
They faced a powerful rival from North Africa called Carthage Carthage founded by Phoenicians around 800 BC who were sea traders

Both Rome and Carthage wanted to control the island of Sicily

First Punic War began in 264 BC when Rome sent an army to Sicily to prevent a Carthaginian takeover

To this point Rome had fought their battles on land. Realizing they could not defeat a sea power they built a large Navy that would eventually defeat the Carthaginians off the coast of Sicily.

Carthage was forced to leave Sicily and pay a huge fine to the Romans.

Because of the loss of Sicily, Carthage expanded its empire into what is now Southern Spain.

Rome was uneasy about Carthage being on the European continent to the West Rome helped the people in Spain rebel against the Carthaginians

Making the Carthaginians angry, Carthage sent its greatest general, Hannibal, to attack Rome. This began the second Punic War.

Hannibal landed his forces in Spain and marched east to Italy. Because he tried to cross the Alps he had severe losses to his army

When in the Alps Hannibal was attacked by mountain tribes and lost half of his Army.

The Romans suffered a severe loss at the Battle of Cannae in Southern Italy. Hannibal’s was outnumbered but they prevailed in the battle

In 202 BC a general by the name of Scipio raised an army and invaded Carthage. Hannibal, in Europe, had to return home to defend his country

Scipio defeated the Carthaginians at Zama and Carthage gave up Spain to Rome. It also gave up its Navy and paid a fine

Rome finally destroyed Carthage by burning it to the ground and enslaving 50,000 people.
