1 Geometric Network Toolset
ArcGIS 10.1

2 Introduction In this course we will discuss the new Geometric Network toolset that is available with ArcGIS Having this new functionality in the form of geoprocessing tools allows you to include them as part of an overall geoprocessing model to manage your geometric networks. Additionally, with ArcGIS 10.1, settings that you make to the Utility Network Analyst toolbar persist in map documents. This means that you can set up your network tracing, save the map document, and when it's opened next, the settings from when you last saved are present.

3 Learning Objectives By the end of this course, learners should be able to: Locate the geoprocessing tools for working with geometric networks. Understand the use of each of the six new tools

4 Geometric Network Toolset
The Geometric Network toolset contains tools to create, manage, and run trace tasks on geometric networks.

5 Create Geometric Network
This tool creates a geometric network in an ArcSDE, file, or personal geodatabase using the specified feature classes, role for each feature class, and the specified weights with weight associations. The feature classes must reside in the same feature dataset as the geometric network. Only point and line feature classes are supported as input. The feature classes must be simple and cannot participate in another geometric network or other advanced geodatabase dataset.

6 Add Connectivity Rules
The geometric network toolset contains two tools that will allow you to create new connectivity rules to an existing geometric network. Add Edge-Edge Connectivity Rule to Geometric Network Add Edge-Junction Connectivity Rule to Geometric Network

7 Remove Connectivity Rule
This tool will remove connectivity rules from a geometric network. The feature classes specified must reside in the geometric network. Removal of an edge-edge rule does not remove the corresponding edge-junction rules. Conversely, removal of an edge-junction rule does not remove the corresponding edge-edge rule.

8 Remove Empty Feature Class
This tool will remove an empty feature class from a geometric network. The feature class specified must reside in the geometric network. The feature class being removed and the geometric network may be versioned. The orphan junction feature class is prohibited from being removed A feature class cannot be removed from the geometric network if it is the sole feature class in the network. Only empty feature classes can be removed. Within ArcSDE geodatabase, this may require the Compress tool to be run in order for the feature class to be recognized as empty. This tool will not delete the feature class; it will only remove it from the network.

9 Set Flow Direction This tool will set the flow direction for a geometric network based on either the digitized direction or the source/sink settings in the geometric network. Unlike the Utility Network Analyst toolbar, this tool allows you to set flow direction based on the digitized direction of network edges in addition to the sources/sinks defined in your network. Flow direction must be set within an edit session. If one is not active when the tool is run, the tool will start an edit session. Geometric networks in enterprise geodatabases must be registered as versioned in order for this tool to be used. See Flow direction in a geometric network for more information on flow direction.

10 Trace Geometric Network
The Trace Geometric Network tool solves the specified network analysis problem based on the flags, barriers, and specified weight properties. This tool does not work with network datasets (the networks used by the ArcGIS Network Analyst extension).

11 Review The “Trace Geometric Network” tool will trace routes within a Network Dataset. True False You may use the “Remove Empty Feature Class” tool in which of the following cases. (choose more than 1) To delete the feature class To remove an orphan junction feature class If the data is registered as versioned If the data is not registered as versioned Why must the geometric network be registered as versioned in order to set flow direction?

12 Exercise Using the information provided in this course, create a geometric network using the geoprocessing tools, and use the Geometric Network toolset to manage and run traces on the geometric network.
