Enemies often attacked at end of a days march before bedding down! (why?)
Carried on average 60-70lbs of added weight
Meant to be tough and well conditioned, high grain diet with carbs (ENERGY!!!)– Proteins were a treat!

Crossed the Alps with elephants to attack Rome!
