1 Today’s Goals Consider engagement strategies to enhance blog
Introduce compositional features

2 Engagement strategies
What kind of vlogs do you normally view? Why do you find these vlogs interesting or funny? What strategies can we use to make our vlogs more interesting and engaging to our audience? How could rhetorical appeals be involved in vlogs?

3 Engagement strategies
Know your audience What knowledge does your audience already have? What knowledge do they need? What topics does your audience care most about? How is your topic personally relatable to your audience? Know the expected content According to your topic, purpose, and genre What would audience members expect from this type of vlog? Be concise Do not repeat or include unnecessary information It is better for you to be short and to the point with a shorter vlog than to produce a longer vlog with less engagement Use rhetorical appeals Strong uses of ethos, pathos, and logos are as effective for grabbing attention/interest as they are for persuasion

4 Group activity- engagement workshop
In your vlog groups Audience evaluation: How does the audience feel about your topic? What information is essential to your audience? How is the topic specifically relatable to your audience? How might different subgroups in your audience react differently? Rhetorical appeal usage: What is one example of how you could use ethos to engage your audience? What is one example of how you could use pathos to engage your audience? What is one example of how you could use logos to engage your audience?

5 Class discussion- compositional features
Aside from the main actor/vlogger in the shot while filming, what else do viewers see when watching a vlog? How much do these other elements impact our audience? How are details of the actor/vlogger’s appearance important to viewers?

6 Compositional features
Setting – The background and location for shooting. Lighting – Different lightings can help create particular moods or emphasize characters or objects. Even small assisted lighting can make a big difference. Framing – Important for drama & emphasis. Close ups increase intensity and show importance. Long shots emphasize the environment. Low angles can emphasize a subject or make them seem important. High angles can deemphasize a subject or have a diminutive effect. Furnishings & objects – Objects will have social meaning to viewers, whether they realize it or not. They can be just as important as setting for creating a mood, and also help viewers identify with actors. Clothing & Appearance – The student/actor’s appearance has a huge role in how viewers will regard them. Clothing, attire, and accessories should be carefully picked too help viewers identify with the subject. Note: This is a small sample of compositional features from Unit 2 of ENC1101 on visual rhetoric

7 Group activity- vlog composition
In your vlog groups Spend a few minutes brainstorming about the compositional features you want to use when shooting your vlog What is the mood you want to create for viewers? What setting (that you have access too) would be best to shoot in to create this mood? How do you want the audience to view each cast member? How can that student’s appearance/clothing help fulfill this? Are there any parts/scenes of the vlog that would benefit from close ups, emphasis, or dramatic angles?
