1 Lesson 3-3 Scientific Notation
Obj: The student will be able to express large and small numbers in scientific notation and compare two numbers written in scientific notation HWK: p even, all Vocab: 1) scientific notation – written as the product of two factors, one factor is a number greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10; the other factor is a power of 10. 7,500,000,000 = 7.5 X = 6.9 X 10 −6

2 Writing Numbers in Scientific Notation
1) For numbers greater than or equal to 10, use a positive exponent = X ) For numbers less than 1, use a negative exponent = 3.96 X 10 −3

3 Write each number in standard notation
Ex 1) 3.12 X Ex 2) 1.35 X 10 −4 Ex 3) X

4 Write each number in scientific notation
Ex 4) Ex 5) Ex 6)

5 Ex 7) A monarch butterfly has an average mass of 0. 5 g
Ex 7) A monarch butterfly has an average mass of 0.5 g. In one roosting colony of Mexico, it was estimated that there were 10 million monarch butterflies. Write the total mass in scientific notation.

6 Compare ( <, >, =) Ex 8) 2.78 X X 10 9 Ex 9) 3.98 X X 10 22

7 Ex 10) The components of human blood are red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma. A typical red blood cell has a diameter of approximately 7 X 10 −6 meter. A typical platelet has a diameter of approximately 2.83 X 10 −6 meter. Which has a greater diameter?
