a. Original thirteen colonies were small Only along the Atlantic Coast Slowly move west to Ohio Valley b. Proclamation of 1763: New boundary King George III (GB) tells colonists to stay out of Indian land. Tried to keep the peace No new settlements west of the Appalachian Mountains

Pay money to the government, but have no voice in government. a. GB tax American colonists to pay the debt from the French and Indian War. b. Taxes to raise revenue c. Colonists boycott British goods. Send a message to the British

Declaratory Act (1766): GB has total control over the colonies “in all cases whatsoever.”

Business from England that controlled lots of trade with the colonies. Only place to buy tea. a. Duty on tea Tax on the only tea available. No competition. b. Boston Tea Party
