Engage St Patrick was born in around 385 AD. In his teens, he was captured by pirates and taken to Ireland, where he was put to work as a herdsman. After six years, he managed to escape and possibly fled back to his home. He became a Christian priest before returning to Ireland as a missionary in the mid fifth century. He spent the next 30 years establishing schools, churches, and monasteries across the country. Patrick is said to have died on March 17 in the year 461, so that day has become “St Patrick’s Day”.

Engage Video suggestion … St Patrick's Day Isn't Irish!
Some discussion ideas … St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland – which other patron saints do you know and what are they the patron saint of? Who would you like to be your patron saint and why (be creative)? Discussion techniques - Go back to the Bible passage ask “How does the theme link with the Bible passage?” Discuss the question in pairs for 30 seconds then invite a response from each pair. Use quick-fire answers e.g. throw a soft bean bag / toy to a student, when they answer they throw it back and you quickly throw to another student. Simplify the question - Invite quick one-word answers, write them on the board, then reflect on the answers – see connections. Activity suggestion … Create a St Patrick’s Day shamrock, write words of blessing on it and then give it to a friend (and don’t forget Monica in the Bistro as well, and Mr Boughton-Reynolds and Mr O’Meara etc).

Respond Amen Almighty God,
[Reflect for a minute on the worship theme and our engagement …] Almighty God, who in your providence chose your servant Patrick to be the apostle of the Irish people: keep alive in us the fire of the faith he kindled and strengthen us in our pilgrimage towards the light of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen Prayer / reflection technique – Give a summary of the theme and any responses that students may have made, then invite everyone to be still (remind no books open etc – lessen distraction). To pray or reflect on today’s worship. Be quiet for one minute. Then say the prayer …
