1 Scientific Method (Hypothesis)
BQ: How do scientists discover more about their world?

2 Essential Question How is a hypothesis different than a guess?

3 Objective Students will determine how a hypothesis is different than an educated guess.

4 Agenda: Today Students Will…
Engage by determining if questions have variables in them Explore how a hypothesis is developed Explain why the definition you learned in elementary school “an educated guess” is not an accurate definition Extend your hypothesis development by writing appropriate hypotheses to scientific questions

5 Notebooks Title: Hypothesis Date: 12/6/2018 Write in your notebook:
1. Independent Variable: Dependent Variable: Scientific Question: (2 lines for this) Hypothesis:

6 Changes (a review)…. In order for a question to be testable, a change must happen Vary: to change Variable: something that changes in a scientific investigation Independent Variable: Changes on its own The temperature Dependent Variable: Relies on the independent variable to change How quickly you loose your breath while running

7 Watch! Are the questions scientific? Put your thumb up or down as each question passes……

8 Creating the Question (review)
A scientific question is written in a particular format: What is the effect of (insert independent variable) on (insert dependent variable) .

9 Watch Again…. At your tables, watch the video again..
In your notebooks identify two variable for each picture Independent variable: Dependent variable: Write a scientific question for each set of variables You can pause the video to do so….

10 Next Step The next step of the process is to predict an answer to your scientific question Research your variables Predict how the independent variable will change your dependent variable

11 Hypothesis The prediction you will make is called a hypothesis.
A hypothesis is written in a particular format: If the independent variable (the change) then the dependent variable will (change how) because (reason you say so based on research and prior knowledge)

12 Creating Hypotheses Back to the video…..
In your notebook, determine your hypothesis for each of your scientific questions. If you need to do a little research, you can. Do not spend too much time on the research. Prior knowledge can also be used.

13 Formative Assessment How did your understanding of a hypothesis change during this lesson? How does it differ from what you learned in elementary school? Why do scientists form a hypothesis before they begin an experiment?
