1 Performance Evaluation
4th Edition Chapter 27 Design Step #7: Performance Evaluation

2 What You Will Learn What are metrics? The final competition
Design Milestone 7: Individual Performance Testing Grading significantly dependent on individual performance testing Exploring Engineering

3 What are “Metrics”? Metrics may be force, momentum, speed, time etc. appropriate to the competition If your metrics are better than an opponents you should expect to win in a head-to-head encounter Exploring Engineering 3

4 The Final Competition This is what you have been working towards!
Design Milestone 7: Individual performance testing Assignment Learn the capabilities of your design Fine tune it! Performance test set by instructor Exploring Engineering 4

5 How am I doing? Grading Team grades are based on the quality of performance demonstrated in the best of three trials and are computed as follows: where: Grade = Assigned grade on a scale of 100 points B = Base grade (typically, B =70 points) I = Total number of metrics J = Total number of penalties assessed for rules’ violations Exploring Engineering 5

6 Grading Continued Wi = Number of grade points associated with the i th metric and defined such that mi = Measured value of the I th metric Mi = Best value of mi recorded by any team in the class n = 1 (if performance is directly proportional to mi) n = - 1 (if performance is inversely proportional to mi) Pj = Number of grade points associated with the j th penalty Exploring Engineering 6

7 Grading Concluded If the grade calculated is less than or equal to B then Grade = f × B where Grade = Assigned grade on a scale of 100 points B = Same base grade as above f = Fraction of manufacturing that was completed Exploring Engineering 7

8 Summary Metrics are physical criteria that distinguishes your project from those of the other contestants Note how the competition marks are skewed in favor of those who finished the previous design milestones in good order … Exploring Engineering 8
