Unit 4 Project Design, implementation and evaluation
HND in Computing and Systems Development Unit 4 Project Design, implementation and evaluation
2
Aim To develop learners’ skills of independent enquiry by undertaking a sustained investigation of direct relevance to their vocational, academic and professional development.
3
More from the unit abstract
Opportunities to develop skills in: decision making, problem solving Communication Uses skills and knowledge developed in other units A realistic project
4
The learner Is required to: select, plan, implement evaluate a project
present the outcomes (process and product) Will develop ability to work: individually and/or with others, within a defined timescale and given constraints, to produce an acceptable and viable solution to an agreed brief.
5
Group project? Group projects are allowed. Each learner must:
be clear about their responsibilities at the start of the project be accountable for each aspect of the work make a contribution to the end result.
6
Learning outcomes On successful completion of this unit a learner will: Be able to formulate a project Be able to implement the project within agreed procedures and to specification Be able to evaluate the project outcomes Be able to present the project outcomes..
7
LO1: Be able to formulate a project
Develop skills in decision making: First decision: What will your project be?
8
Project selection researching and reviewing areas of interest;
literature review; methods of evaluating feasibility of projects, initial critical analysis of the outline specification, selection of project option, initiating a project logbook/diary, estimating costs and resource implications, identifying goals and limitations; value of project, rationale for selection, agree roles allocate responsibilities (individually with tutor/supervisor and within project group if appropriate)
9
Task One Select 3 areas of interest either individually or as a group.
“independent enquiry by undertaking a sustained investigation of direct relevance to their vocational, academic and professional development.” Research and review these areas; do a headline review initially, narrowing down to one option.
10
Feasibility of projects
Why? What has kicked off the project? E.g. IT system is out of date Alternative Solutions. E.g. redevelop existing, upgrade, replace, merge with other system Feasibility “Can we deliver it on time and under budget?” Research: online research, what have other companies done? How well did their solutions work? Prototyping: build a sample including the highest risk Time-boxing: Complete some of the tasks in your project plan and measure how long it took vs. planned. Preferred solution: most feasible to implement, lowest risk, have the highest confidence of delivering. Reassess Check feasibility of all identified tasks Produce feasibility report Five Steps to Determine Project Feasibility, by Andrew Makar on January 26, 2010 in Project Portfolio Management. accessed 21/07/15.
