1 Response to Instruction and Intervention
Meeting the Needs of ALL Fulton County Students

2 Response to Intervention Training Agenda

3 Goals for Today Knows Do
How to implement research based instruction and intervention with fidelity The Fulton County pyramid of instruction and intervention (RTI²) Uses data to drive instruction in each tier Do

4 RTI² is not………………….. I² = Instruction + Intervention
a special education initiative. just another thing teachers have to do. I² = Instruction + Intervention

5 RTI² is an instructional framework that addresses every student in Fulton County – all instruction, all intervention, every student, every level, every classroom

6 Show What You Know! Intensive Behavior Interventions
Fidelity of Instruction Differentiated Instruction Standards-Based Instruction Intervention 3-5 days of week for at-least 15 minutes Intensive Intervention Strength Based Targeted Intervention Skill Gaps 10-15% of Students Tier 4 Tier 2 Progress-Monitoring every other week Weekly Progress- Monitoring Data Teams Basic Skills Flexible Grouping Tiered assignments and assessments Multiple Formative Assessments School-Wide Discipline Plan Intensive Behavior Interventions 4 students or less in intervention group 8 students or less in intervention group Intervention 4-5 days a week for approximately 30+ minutes Universal Screening 5% or Less of Students Less than 10% of Students 80-100% of Students Tier 3 Tier 1 Teach standards with materials at different readability levels Re-teaching and remediation of Standards Positive Behavior Supports SST Specially Designed Instruction Targeted Behavior Interventions Show What You Know!

7 Tier 1 Teach standards with materials at different readability levels
Universal Screening 80-100% of Students Tier 1 Differentiated Instruction Data Teams Teach standards with materials at different readability levels Re-teaching and remediation of Standards Flexible Grouping Tiered assignments and assessments Positive Behavior Supports Multiple Formative Assessments Fidelity of Instruction Standards-Based Instruction School-Wide Discipline Plan

8 Universal Screening Reading – ALL students will take DIBELS Math All students will complete STAR Math

9 Fidelity of Instruction
8 students or less in intervention group Intervention 3-5 days of week for at-least 15 minutes Targeted Intervention Strength Based Skill Gaps 10-15% of Students Tier 2 Progress-Monitoring every other week Basic Skills Fidelity of Instruction Targeted Behavior Interventions Data Teams

10 Change Interventions every 2-4 weeks if no progress is
Progress-Monitoring Tools to use for students in Skills-Based Intervention Groups: DIBELS STAR Math GKIDS Change Interventions every 2-4 weeks if no progress is being made!

11 What is intervention? Intervention always involves instruction.
Strategies and accommodations are not interventions.

12 It’s Been 6 weeks………………………..
Notify Mrs. Porter if no progress has been made. Porter will determine if the student meets the criteria for tier 3 referral (Complete Folder Checklist). When the folder is complete and signed by Porter, place folder in Abrams mailbox. Abrams will schedule a tier three meeting and invite parents, school psychologist and additional support staff. (Do not stop providing services/intervention). IF progress has been made, continue to monitor (until grade level expectations are meet).

13 Tier 3 4 students or less in intervention group
Intervention 4-5 days a week for approximately 30+ minutes Intensive Intervention Strength Intensive Intervention Skill Gaps Tier 3 Weekly Progress-Monitoring Basic Skills Fidelity of Instruction SST Data Teams Less than 10% of students Intensive Behavior Interventions

18 Response to Intervention-Must Knows
All students must start new interventions and progress monitoring at the start of the new school year Students will be monitored on one skill per subject If adequate growth is shown student may stay in current tier Yellow Folders must be up to date If student’s are being tracked for speech you will need to contact the speech therapist and include them as you track-they should be included in all of your meetings Create a plan for implementation of RtI Interventions on your grade level Update parents regularly RtI Data must be updated Tier 2-Yellow Folders 1 year below grade level 6 weeks data collection

19 Must Know Continues………….
Progress monitoring every 2 weeks using Universal Screening (DIBELS, Star Math, Star Early Literacy) At LEAST 3 data points needed to move to tier 3 Interventions 3-5 days a week for 15 minutes Tier 3-Red Folders 2 or more years below grade level 12-18 weeks total dada collection (including tier 2 evidence) Progress monitoring done weekly using Universal Screener (DIBELS, STAR Math, Star Early Literacy) At LEAST 6 data points needed Interventions 4-5 days a week

20 Specially Designed Instruction All Students Differentiated Instruction
Data Drives Instruction Intensive Behavior Intervention Data Collection-Frequency and Duration/FBA Few Intensive Skill Intervention Data-Progress Monitoring Tool Weekly A.P. Accelerated Classes Classroom Assessments Targeted Behavior Intervention Data Collection- Frequency and Duration Some Targeted Skill Intervention Data Collection - Progress Monitoring Tool 2 x month Advanced / Honors Data Collection- Classroom Assessments All Students Differentiated Instruction Universal Screening ~ State Tests ~ Standardized Tests Pre-Tests ~ Post Tests ~ Formative Assessment Discipline Referrals ~ Classroom Behavior Data ~ Attendance All

21 Fidelity of Instruction and Intervention
“is using the curriculum and instructional practices consistently and accurately as they were intended to be used” Daryl Mellard, Ph.D. Why is fidelity important? Ensures that instruction has been implemented as intended Helps link student outcomes to instruction Helps in the determination of intervention effectiveness, and in instructional decision making

22 How well do you stick to the plan?
Elements of Fidelity Adherence How well do you stick to the plan? How well do you adhere to the curriculum or the instruction or the intervention as intended? Duration and Exposure How often How long each time Days per week How many weeks

23 What is your Student responsiveness to instruction?
Elements of Fidelity What is your Student responsiveness to instruction?

24 Fidelity Checklist Teacher is engaged and enthusiastic
Introduce skill and activate prior knowledge Describe and demonstrate skill Elicit student participation Assess student understanding Continually monitor student engagement Follow instruction and intervention prescription Guided student practice – watch, praise, give feedback

25 RTI² Teacher of the Year
Goal Check DO Implement research based instruction and intervention with fidelity RTI² Teacher of the Year
