Misconceptions about communication Meanings are not in words More is not always better Won’t solve all problems It isn’t a natural ability

When people regard each other as unique individuals When people regard each other as objects

Who would you put in each category? Could the same person go between categories? When would each of these categories be useful? We can say the main difference is the degree to which people meet each others’ social needs ME!

Characteristics of interpersonal relationships Uniqueness-each relationship has its own set of rules Impersonal are more formal, tend to use labels Irreplaceability- impersonal relationships are exchangeable Interdependence-what happens to one effects the other person Impersonal-doesn’t matter as much what happens to them Disclosure-the closer you are, the more you share Intrinsic rewards-the relationship is the reward Impersonal tends to meet a different need Scarcity-truly interpersonal relationships are not the majority of the interactions we have
