September 11, 2014 SWBAT: distinguish the difference between similes and metaphors and how they help the reader better understand the character Maria. Initial Activity: How does the use of Spanish help the reader understand how Maria combines her past and her present? Write 1-2 sentences to answer the question.

Word of the day: Endure: to be in a difficult situation without complaining. Example: We may have to endure rain and bugs on our camping trip.

What is a simile? What is a metaphor?

Example: The soccer player is like a tiger on the field.
A simile is a comparison of two unlike things using the words like or as. Example: The soccer player is like a tiger on the field. A metaphor compares two unlike things by stating that one is the other. Example: The soccer player is a tiger on the field.
