What is an interest group?
A collection of people who share certain views on public matters and work to shape public policy to their benefit Public policy is all of the goals that a government pursues in the many areas of human affairs in which it is involved

What purposes does an interest group serve?
1. Stimulates interest in public affairs 2. Represents their members based on shared interests 3. Provides information to government 4. Provides money/votes to candidates 5. Shapes public opinion through propaganda

Labor groups Agricultural groups Professional Associations Issue-oriented groups Religious Organizations Public Interest Groups

What is a lobbyist? Lobbying The process by which organized interest groups attempt to affect the decisions and actions of public officials Lobbyist (Sydney Allen Wade) Those people who try to persuade public officials to do those things that interest groups want them to do Can lobby any branch of government
