1
Honoring parents involves much more than just sending a card one day a year. Honor should be reflected daily in our speech and in our concern for the welfare of our parents.
2
Showing Honor in our Speech
Making “light” of parents is condemned (Ezekiel 22:7) Cursing parents was a capital crime under the Law of Moses (Exodus 20:12; 21:17; Leviticus 20:9) Jesus taught the same principle (Matthew 15:4) Our speech should bless, not curse (Proverbs 20:20; 30:11, 17)
3
Showing Honor by Providing Care
Jesus made this application (Matthew 15:1-9; John 19:25-27 ) We are to show piety at home and repay parents (1 Timothy 5:4, 16) The quality of care we give should reflect honor (Malachi 1:6-8) A “destroyer” is more concerned with purloining the possessions of parents than with providing for their welfare (Proverbs 28:24)
4
Showing Honor also involves…
Preference (Romans 12:10) Paying attention to parents’ godly counsel (Proverbs 23:22-25) Respecting position regardless of performance (Romans 13:6-7; 1 Peter 2:17; Acts 5:29)
