Carolingian Dynasty Charles Martel ( )- Stopped the Muslim Moors at the Battle of Tours in 732. Pepin the Short- the son of Charles Martel. Cooperated with Pope(fought the Lombards). Pepin died in 768 and his son Charlemagne took over rule.

Charlemagne or “Charles the Great” was known as the light in the dark ages.
He built an empire greater than any known since ancient Rome. United Kingdoms & Spread Christianity.

In 800 Charlemagne helped defend Pope against mob of attackers
Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne “Holy Roman Emperor.” This signified the joining of the Germanic Power and the Church Power coming together

Charlemagne’s Rule He governed his people very closely.
Sent royal agents to make sure the “Counts” (powerful landowners) were ruling effectively. Regularly visited every part of his kingdom.

Encouraged learning Surrounded himself with scholars of English, German, Italian, and Spanish Ordered Monasteries to open schools and train monks and priests.

Devoutly religious but politically ineffective Charlemagne’s 3 grandsons fought for control and divided the Empire with the Treaty of Verdun in 843 Carolingian Kings lost power and central authority broke down
