Act 2 Scene 4
Orsino enjoys philosophizing about love, but sometimes he contradicts himself. Reread the two speeches in which he compares men and women in their capacity to love (lines and lines ). What contradictions does Orsino make in the two speeches? What are some reasons that Orsino might be unclear about love?

6. Reader Response Act 2 Scene 4
In his first speech, Orsino says that women should pursue older men because men do not love as long or as reliably as women do. Later in the scene, however, Orsino claims that no woman can love as strongly as he loves Olivia. Orsino may be unclear about love because his love is unrequited so he does not have the authority to comment on it.

As Malvolio, write a diary entry in which you develop your plan, now that you have discovered Olivia’s love. Your diary might include poetry about Olivia.
This scene, like all of those in which Sir Toby and his friends appear, contains many words and phrases that are colloquial language or slang of Shakespeare’s time. Rewrite the first twenty lines of the scene using language that you and your friends would use.

Maria plans this joke because Malvolio accuses her of not caring for Olivia because she is present when Sir Toby and Sir Andrew are partying loudly. ( ).
Maria is also sick of the fact that Malvolio acts like a good two shoes when he is nothing more than a conceited flatterer. ( ).

What creates the humour in Act II, scene 5? Why do you think that an Elizabethan audience would have laughed alongside Sir Toby and the others?

4. This scene is funny because of the way in which Malvolio is so cleverly duped. Maria and her friends use Malvolio’s arrogant nature to trick him as they know he is hungry for power. Also, the instructions in the letter add humor as Maria knows Olivia’s likes and dislikes and uses this information to make Malvolio act in ways that will anger her. Lastly, the future irony in Malvolio’s dress will make the audience laugh. Lower class serving people wore yellow stockings, and so the fact that he will wear them to woo a countess is hilariously ironic.

5. This trick targets Malvolio’s weaknesses. First, since he is self-absorbed, he will believe Olivia likes him. Second, his want for higher status will blind him from the fact that this is a joke.
6. When Malvolio finds out this is a joke he will be outraged. First, he takes everything so seriously so this trick will anger him. Also, he will be really embarassed because status means so much to him.
