Folder Resources Additional Comments Confidentiality and FERPA
Student Situation Resolution Team (SSRT) Student Rights and Responsibilities Also folder includes information about confidentiality and adherence to federal laws such as FERPA and HIPPA. We do take confidentiality of medical and academic records very seriously and know that you will too. However, in cases of health and safety emergencies or if someone’s behavior is impeding others the law allows for the sharing of those behaviors and their effects. We suggest you start with your Chair or Dean; however, you can also contact my office - Dean of Students Department or FSUPD so someone is aware and can assist if needed. Most likely if a student is disturbing one learning environment – he or she is doing so elsewhere and the earlier we can intervene the more likely we can resolve the issue. Want you to be aware that to assist with some of the more difficult situations, a few years ago we created the Student Situation Resolution Team (SSRT). This is a group of individuals from across campus who meet monthly to address issues surrounding students of concern on campus.

Interaction with a Distressed Student If student exhibits behaviors which suggest he/she may harm self/ others or you feel threatened Call FSUPD at or 911 immediately If student needs guidance or support but does not exhibit harmful behaviors or you do not feel threatened Depending on the situation, contact or refer the student to the following resources (see grid) If you find yourself in interacting with a student in distress, we suggest you follow these guidelines found on the inside of the folder: If behaviors suggest the individual might harm him or herself or others or your feel threatened, immediately call FSUPD at or 911. If the student needs additional guidance or support but does not exhibit harmful behaviors or you do not feel threatened then contact the Dean of Students Department or refer the student to any of the resources on the inside cover of the folder.

Dean of Students Department
Contact the Department for assistance Part of the Division of Student Affairs Again, if you have a situation you are not sure how to handle feel free to contact the Dean of Students Department or FSUPD at any time and we will assist you. As you know the world of higher education is very different than when we were in college and we have to be prepared for instances we never thought possible. The good news is for the most part you will have few interactions with students that rise to this level. However, if you do, there is a lot of support and assistance within our community. Thank you for listening and it is my pleasure to welcome Chief David Perry to the microphone to conclude our presentation.
