Context The conservative MP Robert Croft Bourne died on 7 August , triggering the by election. On 14 September, the Conservatives selected Quintin Hogg, a committed supporter of appeasement and Chamberlain The Liberal Party had selected Ivor Davies as its candidate and The Labour Party selected Patrick Gordon Walker, who had contested the seat at the 1935 general election. On 13 September, Davies offered to stand down from the by-election if Labour did the same and backed a Popular Front candidate against the Conservatives. Eventually, reluctantly, both parties supported Sandy Lindsay, an Independent Progressive.

Key points from the October by-election
‘A vote for Hogg, is a vote for Hitler’……. The campaign and election result polarised the community and was one of the first examples of a rising opposition towards the governments policy of appeasement.
