Warm-Up Get out the “explorer journal” you wrote yesterday and put your name on it. Answer the following questions somewhere on the paper: What can we learn from reading explorers’ journals? Would you consider these journals to be something that we MUST read? If a someone does read them, what is one thing he/she MUST learn from them?

What does voice (syntax and language) reveal?
They selected women because these can trade everywhere, even if there be war. So we went on our way and traversed the whole country to the South Sea, and our resolution was not shaken by the fear of great starvation, which the Indians said we should suffer (and indeed suffered) during the first seventeen days of travel. They chose women because they can trade everywhere, even if there’s a war. So we kept going and traveled all the way across the country to the South Sea. The Indians said we would starve but that didn’t stop us. Indeed, we did go hungry for those seventeen days.

Syntax Critique Finish syntax analysis from yesterday:
Each table will write a claim-cite-clarify paragraph that describes the syntax and explains its effect on the text. (How does the sentence structure “match” the text? How does it affect pace? characterization? mood? tone?)

Syntax Critique Example
Claim: The author uses short thoughtful phrases. State what you noticed about the syntax Cite: For example, the first two sentences are followed by ellipses points. Give an example to provide evidence Clarify: This suggests that the narrator is thinking deeply about his surroundings. He is taking in the scene and contemplating its beauty. Explain HOW the evidence proves your claim AND/OR so what/why the author did that

“Museum Indians” – pg. 34 Before we read: Predict based on title and pictures Version 1: My mother is a Dakota Indian who moved to Chicago when she was sixteen. Several years ago she cut her hair and put the braid of hair in her dresser drawer. What can you infer about the mother? about the narrator?

“Museum Indians” – pg. 34 As we read: Periodically stop and discuss characterization of narrator and mother Jot down observations about syntax or language After we read: Look over observations, and write a claim-cite-clarify. Claim = something you noticed about the diction or syntax of this piece. Cite = evidence to prove that observation Clarify = why the author did that Write your own personal narrative. Mimic syntax and use of language.
