Discovering Cells 3.1
2
I. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things.
3
A. Cell structure describes what cells are made of and how cell parts are put together.
4
B. Cell Functions include taking in food and O2, getting rid of waste and growing.
5
C. Cell size is measured in micrometers.
1 millionth of a meter. 1 RBC = 7 micrometers
6
The first observations of cells was possible due to the invention of the microscope in 1590.
7
Robert Hooke observed cork cells in 1663 and called them cells since they looked like “small rooms.”
8
Examine the time line on
pages with the different types of microscopes developed since 1590.
9
B. Anton van Leeuwenhoek observed
small organisms moving in lake water. He called them “animalcules.” 1674
10
C. Schleiden stated all plants are made of cells. (1838)
Schwann stated animals are made of cells. (1839) Virchow stated that all new cells come from cells that already exist. (1855)
11
D. The Cell Theory states:
All living things are composed of cells. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things. All cells are produced from other cells.
12
III. Unicellular: Composed of one cell ie. bacteria
13
CTOOSOO IV. Multicellular: composed of many cells. Cells can be
organized into tissues, organs, and organ systems.
