1 DO NOW Learning Target: I will be able to identify and describe the interactions between atmosphere, geosphere, biosphere, cryosphere, and hydrosphere. Do Now: What is one way the biosphere and atmosphere interact on Earth?

2 What is a system? A system
Is a combination of related parts that interact in organized fashion. Changes in components of the system can affect the entire system.

3 What happens to a system when one of the parts is removed?

4 Question 1: Looking at the image of Earth, what are the major parts of our planet which could interact as a system?

5 The five spheres The five “spheres” of Earth work together as a complex system: rocks, water, air, ice, and life. On a global scale, each part can be thought of as a sphere, roughly the same size and shape as the planet. The five spheres of Earth are called the: Geosphere __________________________ Hydrosphere ________________________ Atmosphere ________________________ Cryosphere _________________________ Biosphere __________________________

6 Geosphere ?

7 Geosphere (Lithosphere)
Includes the solid ground and the inside of Earth.

8 Hydrosphere ?

9 Hydrosphere Includes all of the rivers, lakes and oceans of Earth.
97% is Sea Water 3% is Fresh Water Frozen water is often placed into its own sphere called the cryosphere The glaciers, icebergs at sea, and the huge icecaps in Greenland and Antarctica Accounts for ~70% of freshwater

10 Atmosphere ?

11 Atmosphere Gaseous environment that surrounds Earth
Provides air for breathing Consists of oxygen, nitrogen, water vapor, carbon dioxide, etc. Protects from Sun’s heat and “light” from the Sun.

12 Biosphere ?

13 Biosphere includes all life
Plants, humans, animals, Insects, microbes, fungi, ect. A duck out of water

14 Cryosphere All of the frozen water on Earth glaciers on land
icebergs and ice flows at sea, huge icecaps in Greenland and Antarctica Accounts for ~70% of freshwater

15 Earth’s Systems Interactions
To identify sphere interactions, think of one feature in the image at a time, decide which sphere it is a part of, then consider how it interacts with the other spheres.

16 Earth’s Systems Interactions
Question 9: What sphere interactions can you infer from this photograph?

17 Earth’s Systems Interactions
Plants (1.________________) draw water (2._________________) and nutrients from the soil (3.________________) and release water vapor into the 4.________________. Humans (5.________________) use farm machinery (manufactured from 6.__________________materials) to plow the fields, and the 7._________________brings precipitation (8._______________) to water the plants. Energy from the sun is stored by plants. When humans or animals (biosphere) eat the plants, they acquire the energy originally captured by the plants. Humans expend some of this energy arranging bricks and wood (geosphere and biosphere) into buildings.
