SOURCE REDUCTION STRATEGIES
There is no all knowing guru who is going to solve your specific problems! In this course you will receive a great deal of information from the presenters – but you will also hear a lot of ideas from your peers in class. Find what works for you and your community.

What does it all mean? WASTE REDUCTION A broader term encompassing all waste management methods, i.e., source reduction, recycling, and composting, that result in reduction of waste going to the combustion facility, transfer station or landfill. WASTE MINIMIZATION Refers to activities specifically designed to reduce industrial hazardous and toxic wastes as they affect land disposal as well as contribute to air and water pollution. POLLUTION PREVENTION Reducing or eliminating waste at the source by modifying production, the use of less-toxic substances, better conservation techniques, and re-use of materials. PRECYCLING The practice of reducing waste by attempting to avoid bringing into the home or business items which will generate waste.

WHY SHOULD TRIBES DEVELOP A SOURCE REDUCTION PROGRAM?
Promotes awareness and stewardship of the land Protects the health of community members as well as the overall environment Improves the quality of life of community members Offers opportunities for cost savings in collection, transportation and disposal Serves as inspiration and a model for other entities and individuals Builds on Tribal sovereignty and links with solid waste compliance Provides opportunities for partnerships
